When we wired Google's official Analytics MCP server into Claude Code this month, two things went wrong before anything went right. Google's default command-line login refused the read-only Analytics scope with a flat "This app is blocked," and the fix was creating our own OAuth client in a Google Cloud project. Then a filter for ChatGPT traffic came back off by about a hundredfold. The API's FULL_REGEXP match only counts whole values, so "chatgpt" never matched "chatgpt.com".
That's the honest state of SEO MCP servers in 2026. There are dozens, they're useful, and each one has its own login, its own pricing meter and its own quiet way of giving you a wrong answer.
We checked 18 of them on September 26 against each vendor's own docs and pricing pages, then ranked the ten below by how much real SEO work each one does per dollar and per hour of setup. Full disclosure: we make number three, RankControl's MCP, and we've placed it where we think it belongs. If MCP is new to you, start with our plain guide to what an SEO MCP server is.
1. Ahrefs MCP
Ahrefs has the best SEO data you can pipe into Claude, and its MCP server is where most of the real-user chatter on X and Reddit points. It's remote only, you connect with an OAuth screen that mints an MCP-scoped key, and it exposes 21 tool groups covering Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Brand Radar, plus your own Search Console data. You can load only the groups you need, which matters more than it sounds (more on that below).

The catch is the meter. MCP needs a paid plan from Lite at $129 a month, rows per request cap at 100 on Lite, and every call spends the plan's monthly API units. Heavy agent users kept hitting the ceiling, and in mid-September Ahrefs' CEO announced double MCP units on every plan, calling MCP its fastest-growing product this year. Our comparison of MCP vs API for SEO work covers when a plain API call is the cheaper route.
It took one week to use all of my @ahrefs MCP credits. Back to computer use we go. https://t.co/wS5NxhvmZ3
Ian Nuttall@iannuttallSep 4, 2026Ian Nuttall's complaint two weeks earlier was the typical one: a single week of agent use drained a whole month of Ahrefs MCP credits.
2. Semrush MCP
| Semrush MCP | |
|---|---|
| Hosting | Remote only, OAuth or API key |
| Plans that include it | Semrush One Starter or Pro+, SEO Classic Pro or Guru (50,000 API units) |
| Covers | SEO API, Trends API, read-only Projects data |
| Clients | Official apps for Claude, ChatGPT and Perplexity, plus Claude Code and Cursor |
Semrush covers nearly the same ground as Ahrefs through a discovery pattern: a dozen research tools plus a pair that fetch any report's schema and run it. If your team already pays for a plan that includes API units, this is the cheapest serious data source on the list, because you're already paying for it.
Two things to know first. Semrush's own docs warn that AI responses "may be incomplete or inaccurate," and on r/ClaudeAI one user said they found it hard to trust the numbers because they were hard to verify. The other is plan confusion, since the MCP only appears on certain tiers, which is why we'd check your plan page before promising anyone a workflow.

3. RankControl MCP
The first two servers answer questions. RankControl's MCP server does a different job: it lets Claude, Claude Code, Cursor or Codex run an AI search visibility pipeline. Your assistant can check your visibility score and recent citations, propose article titles, approve them onto a calendar and publish to your CMS. Paste https://api.rctrl.com/mcp into Claude's connectors, or run npx rankcontrol mcp locally, and you get 80+ tools with nothing extra to pay on the $400-a-month plan.

We built one rule into it on purpose. Anything with a visible side effect, like publishing, is a dry run until you confirm. A founder on r/ClaudeCode described the day an agent retrofitting their pages deleted their three best-performing articles, and that's the failure we wanted to rule out. The queries themselves get checked every week across six engines through RankControl's AI visibility tracking. It isn't a keyword database, so most teams pair it with Ahrefs or Semrush for research.
200+ SaaS teams already track their AI citations.
They know exactly when ChatGPT mentions their brand, and when it stops. Do you?

4. DataForSEO MCP
DataForSEO took the opposite approach from everyone else. Its v3 server, released in August, exposes just four tools: three that search DataForSEO's own API docs and one generic api_request that calls any endpoint, whether that's SERPs, keywords, backlinks or AI Optimization data. The model reads the docs, then builds the call.

The appeal is pricing. There's no subscription, just pay-as-you-go credit with a $50 minimum payment, and one r/SEO commenter summed up why people switch: you pay only when you use the data. The trade-off is setup and round trips, since every new kind of question starts with a docs lookup. Builders chaining it with Search Console and GA4 servers in Claude Code seem happiest with it; see the DataForSEO MCP page for the hosted URL.
5. Google Search Console MCP (mcp-gsc)
Google hasn't shipped an official Search Console MCP server, which surprised us. The community fills the gap, and the most-used option is mcp-gsc, with about 1,700 GitHub stars and roughly 20 tools for search analytics, period comparisons, URL inspection and sitemaps. It's free, runs locally with uvx, and needs your own Google Cloud OAuth client plus Python 3.11 or newer.

Why rank a hobby server this high? Because your own query data beats any third-party index in a new niche. The same r/ClaudeCode founder noticed Ahrefs tracked about 50 keywords for their site, while Search Console's top 1,000 queries covered only 4% of their impressions. Everything else was long tail no database had indexed yet. Plenty of people want Google to ship its own, and one X post asking for exactly that drew about 70,000 views in September:
Is there a google search CLI or MCP? Connecting Claude directly to google search data would be great for SEO. https://t.co/Ndj2kOIgxJ
Marty Markenson@martyamarkSep 21, 2026We've written more about reading ChatGPT-style prompts in Search Console if that's your use case.
6. Google Analytics MCP
Google's Analytics MCP server is official, free and still labeled experimental. It has nine tools, including standard, funnel and realtime reports, and runs locally through pipx. It answers the questions SEO data can't, like which landing pages AI assistants send people to.

It's also the one that bit us in the intro. Setup takes a Google Cloud project with two APIs enabled and, in our case, our own OAuth client. Once it works, check its filters the way you'd check a junior analyst's. For the AI traffic side, our GA4 guide to AI referrals covers the channel settings.
7. Screaming Frog SEO Spider MCP
Screaming Frog put an MCP server inside the desktop app in SEO Spider version 24, released in May. You switch it on under Settings, and Claude or LM Studio can then run crawls, analyze them and export results in plain language. It needs a paid SEO Spider licence, and nothing is hosted, so the crawl stays on your machine.

Read the warning on that settings screen before you tick the box. Enabling it lets the AI write and run Node.js scripts on your computer, and Screaming Frog says plainly that not every feature is supported yet.
8. Firecrawl MCP
Firecrawl is the most-starred server we checked, at about 7,500 GitHub stars. It gives your assistant scrape, crawl, map and search tools, which makes it the easy way to read twenty competitor pages before you brief an article. A keyless endpoint offers three tools for free, while the full set of 26 needs an account; the free tier covers 1,000 credits a month, and Hobby is $16 a month, billed annually, for 5,000. Its MCP docs list every endpoint.

9. Similarweb MCP
Similarweb's MCP server brings traffic, engagement, website rank and SERP metrics into Claude or Cursor, and it's the one to reach for when a client asks how much traffic a rival really gets. There's no cheap door, though. It needs a Similarweb subscription with API access, and each call spends the same data credits as the API.

How often does ChatGPT mention your brand?
Most founders have no idea. The answer might surprise you.

10. WordPress.com MCP (or Webflow's)
The last slot goes to publishing. Automattic's hosted WordPress.com MCP server lets Claude create and edit posts and pages, and it's free on WordPress.com paid plans. Self-hosted sites need Jetpack AI or Jetpack Complete. Skip the old Automattic/wordpress-mcp repo, which is archived. On Webflow, the official MCP server is free and manages CMS collections as well as page elements.

Publishing through an MCP is only as careful as the prompt. If you'd rather have articles planned, written and pushed to your site with an approval step built in, RankControl publishes to WordPress, Webflow and seven other destinations the same way from the dashboard or from Claude.
A few more worth knowing
Moz has an MCP server in beta, limited to account owners and tied to a Moz API plan that starts at $20 a month. Microsoft's Clarity server is free, but its underlying API allows only 10 requests per project per day. Bing Webmaster Tools has a community server with a small following, and Keywords Everywhere sells 100,000 credits a year for $84.
The tool-list tax
Every server you connect loads its tool descriptions into every prompt, and SEO servers are big. Ahrefs alone spans 21 tool groups. On r/SEO_Experts one practitioner put it plainly: once you connect two or three servers with 100+ tools each, the agent starts making odd tool choices and burning credits. We call this the tool-list tax, and you pay it on every message whether or not you use the tools.
So connect by job, not by brand. A lean setup for most teams is one data source (Ahrefs, Semrush or DataForSEO), Search Console for your own queries, and one server that acts, whether that's a CMS or RankControl. Use Ahrefs' tool-group filter to load only what you need.
| Server | Official | Hosting | Price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | Yes | Remote | From $129/mo (Lite) | Keyword and backlink data |
| Semrush | Yes | Remote | Plans with API units | Teams already on Semrush |
| RankControl | Yes | Remote or local | Included in $400/mo | Running AI search work |
| DataForSEO | Yes | Remote or local | Pay as you go, $50 minimum | Raw data for builders |
| mcp-gsc | Community | Local | Free | Your own search queries |
| Google Analytics | Yes (experimental) | Local | Free | Traffic and AI referrals |
| Screaming Frog | Yes | Local (desktop) | Paid licence | Crawls in plain language |
| Firecrawl | Yes | Remote or local | Free tier, then from $16/mo | Reading pages at scale |
| Similarweb | Yes | Remote | API-tier subscription | Competitor traffic |
| WordPress.com | Yes | Remote | Free on paid WP.com plans | Publishing posts |
You can wire all of this together yourself: pick the servers, manage the keys, write the prompts, check every number and approve every publish. Or RankControl's agents can run the plan-write-publish-track loop every month, while you use Claude for the questions only you can ask. The content engine and the MCP share the same workspace, so nothing you do in one is invisible to the other.
15 hours a week manually. Or 15 minutes with RankControl.
Track citations, monitor competitors, and fix content gaps across every AI search engine. Automatically.
