Search for "backlink tool" and you'll find a page of free backlink checkers. When we looked on October 19, 2026, all nine of Google's top organic results in the US were checker pages from tool makers and SEO sites. Every one of them tells you which links a site already has.
That's useful, but it isn't the hard part of link building. The hard part is finding the next site to ask. A checker counts links. A prospecting tool tells you who's likely to give you one.
So this list judges ten backlink tools on that one job. We call it the next-link test: does the tool tell you who to ask next, or only who already linked? Every price below comes from each vendor's own pricing page, checked on October 19, 2026. We haven't tested the tools ourselves.
How we judged them
Finding link prospects breaks down into a few jobs.
- Gap or intersect. Sites that link to your competitors but not to you.
- Unlinked mentions. Pages that mention your brand without linking.
- Broken links. Dead pages with links pointing at them, which you can offer to replace.
- Contacts. The right person at each site, with a working email.
- Outreach. Sending, following up and tracking replies.
No single tool does all five well. Most people combine one data tool with one outreach tool.
We also counted how often each vendor used the word "prospecting" on its own pricing or product pages. Pitchbox used it 25 times, BuzzStream 5 and Majestic once. Ahrefs, Semrush and Moz didn't use it at all, even though all three have strong gap tools. The data giants sell checkers with prospecting features attached. The outreach tools sell prospecting itself.

You're getting AI traffic. But do you know where it comes from?
RankControl credits every visit to the assistant that sent it: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, or Grok. Full source attribution, next to your Google traffic.
1. Ahrefs
Ahrefs is the tool many link builders reach for first, and its backlink index is the main reason. For prospecting, its Link Intersect tool shows sites linking to competitors but not to you. Its broken link checker lets you "use the '404 not found' filter to find highly linked-to broken pages," which is the starting point for broken link building. Ahrefs also markets Firehose, which streams new pages that mention your brand, so you can catch unlinked mentions while they're fresh.

Pricing: Lite $129/mo, Standard $249/mo, Advanced $449/mo, Enterprise $1,499/mo. There's also a $29 Starter plan and a limited free tier. Ahrefs' FAQ says plainly, "We never run discounts," and there's no free trial.
Limitation: It finds prospects but doesn't help you contact them. You'll need a separate outreach tool or a lot of copying and pasting.
One user in r/Backlinks said they rely mostly on Ahrefs because the filters for link type, DR, traffic and anchor make it easier to find real, relevant links instead of a huge spammy list.
2. Semrush
Semrush covers more of SEO than any other tool here, and its Backlink Gap tool is the prospecting piece. Semrush describes it as a way to "find the high-authority domains linking to your competitors that aren't linking to you yet," filtered by relevance.

Pricing: Free plan with limited reports. SEO plan $139/mo, or $117.33/mo billed yearly, with a 7-day free trial. Starter $199/mo, Pro+ $299/mo and custom pricing for Advanced.
Limitation: Like Ahrefs, it stops at the list. If link building is your main job, you're paying for a lot of suite you won't use.
3. RankControl
RankControl works the other way around. Instead of running a prospecting search on any domain you choose, you get link prospects for each article we write and publish on your site. For each one, we find the right contact and draft a personalized outreach email from your own mailbox.

Nothing sends without your approval. You can approve every email yourself, or set a daily cap and let us work through the queue.
Pricing: $400/mo, or $4,000/yr, with a 7-day free trial. That covers up to 100 articles a month, publishing to your site and weekly AI visibility tracking across seven AI engines, as well as the outreach.
Limitation: RankControl isn't a backlink checker. There's no way to explore any domain's link profile, and prospecting is tied to the articles we publish. Most teams that want deep link data pair us with Ahrefs or Semrush.
4. Moz Pro
Moz Pro's Link Intersect is the cheapest strong gap tool on this list. Moz says it lets you "compare up to five backlink profiles to your own to find possible gaps in your strategy." Link Explorer also helps with finding and fixing broken links.

Pricing: From $49/mo for individuals. Standard $99/mo ($79/mo yearly), Medium $179/mo ($143/mo yearly) and Large $299/mo ($239/mo yearly). There's a free trial.
Limitation: Its index is smaller than the biggest ones. A commenter in an r/SEO thread about alternatives to Ahrefs and Semrush suggested running the same domain through two or three tools, Majestic and Moz alongside Ahrefs, because no tool crawls the whole web.

5. Pitchbox
Pitchbox is the most prospecting-focused tool on this list. Its pricing page leads with "Everything you need to discover prospects and turn them into backlinks." It combines prospecting searches, contact finding and email outreach in one platform.

Pricing: Pro $300/mo ($210/mo yearly) with 1,000 prospecting searches and 2,000 outreach emails a month. Advanced $600/mo ($420/mo yearly). Scale $1,200/mo ($825/mo yearly). No self-serve trial; Pitchbox says free trials are available after a demo.
Limitation: The price. It's built for agencies and in-house teams doing outreach every day, and it's more than most small teams need.
6. BuzzStream
BuzzStream is an outreach CRM. It tracks who you've contacted, what you said and when to follow up. In an r/linkbuilding thread about outreach tools, one user said BuzzStream is "built to be much more customizable than PitchBox and serves more as a CRM," and noted you can see people and sites you've contacted before across campaigns.

Best Outreach Tool For SEO?
We have been using PitchBox for a long time, but recently we switched to a custom built solution inhouse - Just wondering is there are any other outreach tools you are using to build links with in 2026?
Pricing: Starter $49/mo for one user and 500 contacts. Growth $174/mo for three users. Professional $424/mo. Custom from $999/mo.
Limitation: It manages outreach well but doesn't find many prospects on its own. Most teams feed it lists from a data tool.
7. Majestic
Majestic is a long-running link index with its own metrics. Its Lite plan is described as being "for audit and prospecting of a small group of sites," and the Pro plan adds Clique Hunter, which finds sites linking to several of the domains you enter.

Pricing: Lite $49.99/mo, Pro $99.99/mo and API $399.99/mo. No free trial, but Lite and Pro have a 7-day money-back guarantee for new customers.
Limitation: It's data only, with no outreach. It works best as a second opinion next to Ahrefs or Semrush.
8. Hunter
Hunter isn't a backlink tool at all, and that's the point of including it. Once you have a list of sites, you still need the right person and a working email. Hunter finds and verifies email addresses and can send cold email sequences.

Pricing: Free for 50 credits a month. Starter $49/mo, Growth $149/mo and Scale $299/mo, with unlimited team seats on every plan.
Limitation: It doesn't find link prospects. It only helps once you know which sites to contact.
9. Respona
Respona used to be known as outreach software. Its homepage now leads with "done-for-you placements on sites people actually read." You pay per placement, from $100 for DR 20+ sites up to $500 for DR 60+ sites.

Pricing: Starter $100, Standard $160, Authority $240, Power $400 and Elite $500 per placement, with volume discounts.
Limitation: It's a service, not a tool, so you don't do the prospecting yourself. Paid placements also raise a policy question. Google's spam policies treat buying links for ranking as link spam unless they're tagged, and our guide to white label link building covers what to check before you buy.
10. Google Search Console
Search Console is free and comes straight from Google. Its Links report lets you "see who links to you the most, your top-linked pages, and more."

Pricing: Free.
Limitation: Google says the report "isn't a comprehensive list of every link on your site," and it only shows your own links, never competitors'. It fails the next-link test completely. Use it to see what you already have, then look elsewhere for who to ask next. Our guide to backlinks in Search Console covers it in depth.
A simple two-tool workflow
Most small teams don't need five tools. A data tool and an outreach tool cover the whole job.
- Pick three competitors that rank for the topics you want links for.
- Run a gap report in Ahrefs, Semrush or Moz to list sites linking to them but not to you.
- Cut the list. Drop anything off-topic, spammy or with no real traffic. Twenty good prospects beat two hundred weak ones.
- Find the contact with Hunter or your outreach tool's built-in finder.
- Send and track in BuzzStream or Pitchbox, with one follow-up a week later.
Repeat it once a month, or each time you publish something worth linking to. The gap report changes as your competitors earn new links, so the list never runs dry.
How to pick
Match the tool to the job you're stuck on.
| If you need | Start with |
|---|---|
| The deepest link data and gap analysis | Ahrefs or Semrush |
| Prospects and outreach handled for each article | RankControl |
| A cheaper gap tool | Moz Pro |
| Outreach at volume | Pitchbox |
| A CRM for outreach you already do | BuzzStream |
| Email addresses for a list you have | Hunter |
| A free view of your own links | Google Search Console |
Whatever you choose, the method matters more than the tool. Our guide to how to build backlinks covers each method and the time it takes, and our guide to the types of backlinks explains which links are worth chasing. Doing it yourself or handing it off
Prospecting by hand looks like this. Run a gap report, sort the list, check each site, find a contact, write an email and follow up a week later. For ten prospects, that's easily an afternoon. For every article you publish, it adds up fast.
You can build that workflow with the tools above. Or RankControl can run it for each published article, finding the prospects and the contacts and drafting the emails from your own mailbox for you to approve. Expect the effect to show first as Google traffic, with AI citations following more slowly as links and mentions build up.
Know exactly what AI says about your competitors.
RankControl's Recon Agent monitors competitor citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Google AI Mode, and Google AI Overviews. See where they show up and you don't.
