How to Switch from Wellows to RankControl Without Losing Data

Wellows published a study this year that makes a strong case for tracking each AI engine separately. Across 22.7 million citations collected between January and June 2026, Perplexity never cited 89.1% of the sites ChatGPT cited for the same questions, and only 0.31% of sources showed up on all five engines Wellows tracks. Its own conclusion is that a blended score hides which engine you're winning.

That finding is worth keeping in mind when you switch, because the engine list changes. Wellows tracks five engines, and Claude and Grok aren't among them. The good news for a move is that Wellows documents both an export and an API, so most of your history can leave with you. This guide covers what to export, how to cancel without losing paid time, and where each Wellows feature lands in RankControl. Wellows' pricing page, feature pages and terms were checked on September 26, 2026.

Why teams move off Wellows

Wellows sells a monthly balance of AI answers. One prompt asked on one engine on one day spends one answer. Basic is $29 for 1,800 answers a month, and the Standard plan Wellows starts new accounts on is $97 for 6,500, enough for 43 prompts checked daily on all five engines.

Wellows pricing page showing four plans: Basic at $29 a month for 1,800 AI answers, Standard at $97 for 6,500, Growth at $249 for 18,000 and Scale at $497 for 36,000, with the number of prompts each balance covers daily

The meter is the first reason people look around. Unused answers don't roll over, and when the balance hits zero mid-month, collection pauses until the billing date. Wellows is upfront about both, and its pricing page shows your projected run-out date, but heavy months still end early.

The second reason is coverage. Wellows' engines are ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. If your buyers use Claude or Grok, those answers go unmeasured, and by Wellows' own study they would draw on different sources again.

Then there's the last step of the work. KIVA, Wellows' writing agent, drafts pages from content opportunities in an editor, and its integrations page lists Search Console and WordPress. Teams on Webflow, Shopify or another CMS still carry each draft across by hand.

What comes with you when you switch from Wellows

Most of what Wellows holds can be exported or copied:

  • Your prompts and projects, with topics and intent tags
  • Citation history, including the daily snapshots behind Performance History
  • Content opportunities and any KIVA drafts you haven't published
  • Outreach contacts and the status of each conversation
  • Brand guidelines you added for content work

Your Search Console data was never Wellows' to keep, and pages you already published stay on your site.

How to export your data from Wellows

Wellows documents its exports, so plan to use them rather than screenshots.

Citation history

The pricing page lists exports "by project and date range, so a client report is a file and not a screenshot." Export each project across its full history, then again for the last day before you cancel. Performance History adds filters for platform, region and competitors before export, which is the view to save if you've been reporting a before-and-after to a client or a CMO.

Bulk data through the API

For many projects, the API is faster. Wellows' API page describes keys you create and manage at the project level for pulling visibility data into dashboards and reporting tools. We didn't find a public endpoint reference, so ask support for the docs if you plan to script the export.

Prompts and content opportunities

Copy each project's prompt list with its topic and intent tags. Then save the content opportunities list, since each entry comes with a suggested title and the buyer intent behind it. That list is a ready shortlist of questions where competitors get cited and you don't.

KIVA drafts and outreach

Copy any unpublished drafts out of the editor, along with the brand guidelines you wrote for them. For outreach, save the contacts and where each conversation stands, so replies already in progress don't go cold.

Cancel before the balance resets

Wellows' terms, last updated April 23, 2025, cover the essentials. You can cancel at any time through your account settings, and subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel before the renewal date. Fees are non-refundable except where the law requires it, though prepaid amounts may be refunded pro rata at Wellows' sole discretion.

Your history stays readable even after the balance runs out, so there's no rush to export in the first week. Do the exports, check the files open, then cancel a few days before the billing date. If you're only moving down a plan, downgrades take effect at the next cycle.

What changes when you move

Wellows does one thing RankControl doesn't. It checks prompts daily, keeps a snapshot every 24 hours, and runs unlimited projects with white-label client dashboards on one balance, while RankControl checks your questions once a week.

The shift is from recommendations to publishing. RankControl's content engine plans titles from the questions your buyers ask, writes each article against the pages already ranking for its keyword, and publishes it as a native post through the CMS you connect. That covers WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, Ghost and five other kinds of destination, and auto-publish stays off until you turn it on. Our RankControl vs Wellows comparison covers the pricing math and engine coverage in more detail.

Expect your numbers to look different, too. A marketer testing several AI visibility tools in r/SEO_LLM this month found that one tool made a brand look healthy while another made it look nearly invisible, and the replies agreed that prompt sets and run frequency explain most of the gap.

Does anyone trust AI visibility scores between different tools?

Testing a few AI visibility tools right now and the numbers don't line up at all. I'm not even talking about small differences. One can make a brand look pretty healthy while another makes it look nearly invisible. I assume a lot comes down...

Call it the baseline reset. Scores don't carry between tools, so compare prompt by prompt: which questions cited you in Wellows' last export, and which cite you in RankControl's first weekly check.

RANKCONTROL

Know exactly what AI says about your competitors.

RankControl's Recon Agent monitors competitor citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok, and Google AI Mode. See where they show up and you don't.

Picking your 50 questions

Wellows' Standard plan is sized for a 40-prompt default setup, so a single-brand Wellows project usually fits under RankControl's 50 with room to spare. Start with the prompts a buyer would ask right before choosing, such as comparisons and "best X for Y" questions, and drop prompts that only test your brand name.

Fill the rest from your content opportunities export. Each opportunity is a question where a competitor gets cited instead of you, which is the exact case AI visibility tracking is built to watch, and each one can become an article RankControl plans and publishes.

Then look at your export engine by engine before you finalize the list. Wellows' study found that engines rarely agree on sources, and your own history will show the same pattern: prompts where ChatGPT cites you and Perplexity doesn't, or the reverse. A prompt that's split across engines is worth keeping, because it shows you where a page is already trusted and where the same answer still needs more support. Keep a few prompts where you're cited on every engine too, since losing one of those is often the first sign a competitor has published something better.

The switch from Wellows, step by step

  1. Note your billing date and current balance.
  2. Export each project's citation history by date range, and save the Performance History views you report on.
  3. Copy prompts, content opportunities, unpublished KIVA drafts and brand guidelines.
  4. Save outreach contacts and the status of open conversations.
  5. Start RankControl's 7-day trial. Connect your CMS, let it build your brand profile from your site, and name up to 10 competitors.
  6. Add your 50 questions. The CLI's query-add takes one per call, so a short loop over your export adds them all.
  7. Cancel Wellows in account settings a few days before the billing date.

If your balance allows it, keep both running for a week before step 7. Wellows' last daily snapshot next to RankControl's first weekly check on the same questions gives you a clean handover point, and it settles most of the baseline-reset confusion before anyone asks why the numbers moved.

What your month looks like afterwards

The work moves from reading a daily score to approving pages. Titles land on a calendar and articles arrive for review, then publish to your site as native posts once you approve them.

Done by hand, that month is heavy. Researching, writing, linking and publishing 20 articles takes 40 to 60 hours, and checking 50 questions on six engines by hand takes about five hours a week. Those are rough estimates, and a tool that stops at drafts leaves the publishing hours with your team.

You can keep running that loop yourself, with your Wellows exports as the map. Or RankControl's agents can run it every month while you approve the pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Wellows' pricing page lists exports by project and date range, and its Performance History lets you filter by platform, region and competitors, then export. Wellows also offers an API with keys managed at the project level for pulling visibility data into other tools.

Wellows' terms say you can cancel at any time through your account settings, and that subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel before the renewal date. Export your history first, then cancel a few days before the next billing date.

Its terms say fees are non-refundable except where the law requires it, and that prepaid amounts may be refunded pro rata at Wellows' sole discretion. Unused AI answers don't roll over either, since the balance resets on each billing date.

Wellows tracks five: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, on every plan. Claude and Grok aren't on the list. RankControl checks ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Google AI Mode every week.

There's no import button. You add up to 50 tracked queries in the dashboard or with the CLI's query-add command, one query per call, so a short loop over your exported prompt list adds them all.
