We went looking for Optimizely's AEO product page while writing this comparison, and there isn't one. Search "Optimizely AEO" and the top results are a webinar recording and a June 10, 2026 press release titled "Optimizely Launches Full AEO Platform." Read the subheading and the shape of the thing changes: "Through a new partnership with Conductor, Optimizely adds AI search visibility and optimization to round out its complete AEO offering."
So the platform is real, but it's a bundle, and the part that reads what ChatGPT says about your brand comes from another company. That matters a lot when you're comparing RankControl vs Optimizely AEO, because it changes who you pay and who does the work. We make RankControl, so weigh this with that bias in mind. Everything about Optimizely below comes from its own press releases, product pages and support docs, checked on September 26, 2026.
RankControl vs Optimizely AEO: the short answer
Optimizely is an enterprise digital experience platform, and its AEO launch adds three pieces to it. A crawler dashboard reads your CDN logs, a set of Opal agents audits pages for AI readability, and a partnership with Conductor supplies citation tracking. Prices come only through sales, the agents run on credits, and the citation data needs a Conductor subscription on top.
RankControl is the narrower tool, and it costs $400 a month with nothing to add. We find the questions your buyers are asking and write articles about them in your brand's voice, then publish them as ordinary posts on whatever CMS you use. Every week we put the same 50 queries to six AI engines and write down who got cited.
Which wins AI search visibility? We'd pick RankControl for most teams, because Optimizely's AEO tools diagnose and recommend, while the fix for weak AI visibility is usually new pages and more mentions. Optimizely leaves that part with your team.

What "Optimizely AEO" actually is
The first piece is Agent Visibility Analytics, a dashboard inside Optimizely Analytics that shows which AI crawlers hit your site and which pages they asked for. It's genuinely useful data. It's also built on CDN logs, and Optimizely's own support article says customers outside its CMS setup have to bring their own Cloudflare log data through an account executive.

The second piece is a set of Opal agents. GEO Auditor and GEO Recommendations review a page for how well AI engines can read it, and GEO Schema Optimization suggests structured data. Optimizely also shipped GEO features in its CMS back in July 2025, including auto-generated Q&A fields, GEO metadata and llms.txt generation.
The third piece does the thing most buyers mean by AEO, which is checking what AI answers say about you. Optimizely's support docs describe three Conductor agents in Opal, among them an AEO Gap Finder and a competitive AI share of voice report. They require "an active Conductor subscription," arranged through your account executive. A Profound agent works the same way, with its own account.

Where Optimizely is clearly ahead of us is inside its own editor. If your site already runs on Optimizely CMS, the Q&A fields and GEO metadata sit right where your writers work, next to experimentation and personalization that RankControl doesn't offer.
Who reads the AI answers, and how often?
This part of the comparison took us longest to pin down. Optimizely's own pages name ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini as the engines the Conductor agents cover, and GEO Auditor adds Google AI Overviews. We didn't find Claude, Grok or Google AI Mode named as tracked engines on any Optimizely-owned page. We found no published cadence either; the agents run when someone calls them in Opal chat.
That on-demand model has a cost you can count. According to Optimizely's credits documentation, a GEO Auditor run costs 70 Opal credits and a Conductor AEO Gap Finder run costs 180 to 200. Each Opal instance gets up to 200 complimentary credits a month, under a promotion that ends December 31, 2026, and those credits are shared across every Optimizely product. One gap analysis can use up most of a month's free allowance.
RankControl's AI visibility tracking works the other way around. The same 50 queries go out every week to six engines, Claude, Grok and Google AI Mode included, with no credits and no second vendor. After a month you're reading a cited rate built from four weekly rounds, along with your share of voice against up to 10 competitors.

Repetition matters more than it sounds. In Glen Allsopp's September study for Ahrefs of more than 70,000 AI responses, ChatGPT returned the identical set of brands for the same prompt on only 0.3% of day pairs. A single run tells you what one answer said on one day. RankControl sends a notification when a new citation lands, and a lost one shows in the dashboard's citation history.

Your competitors are getting cited by AI. You're not.
Every day without citation tracking is a day your competitors pull ahead in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude.
Two details worth reading closely
The first is llms.txt. Optimizely lists llms.txt generation among its GEO-ready CMS features, and it's a reasonable thing to ship. Just weigh it properly. Google's own AI features documentation says there are "no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." When we added llms.txt to 12 sites and tracked them for 90 days, the major AI crawlers barely requested the file, and the combined citation change stayed inside normal week-to-week noise.
The second is the awards. The June AEO launch release closes with analyst and review recognition, a Forrester Wave Leader position and first place on TrustRadius and G2. Read the boilerplate and those belong to Conductor, the partner, not to Optimizely. Optimizely has its own recognition, including nine straight years as a Leader in Gartner's Magic Quadrant for content marketing platforms, but none of it is specific to AEO. If you're comparing vendors on analyst standing, check which company each badge in a release actually belongs to before it goes into a procurement deck.
Credits, contracts and the second vendor
Optimizely's plans page is a form headed "Right, let's game plan," and it says "every Optimizely plan is individually packaged." We found no public prices and no free trial. Opal credits have no published price per credit either; the docs say the account team may reach out about "a more tailored Opal plan" once usage regularly exceeds the free allowance.
So a team buying Optimizely for AI search visibility is really buying at least two contracts, Optimizely's and Conductor's, plus whatever credits the agents consume. On Reddit, one Optimizely customer put the enterprise side of that plainly: they already found it hard to explain internally what the platform was for, and couldn't see how to justify the next renewal. That's one person's account, but it's the budget conversation an enterprise suite always has to win.
| The job | Optimizely AEO | RankControl |
|---|---|---|
| See what AI answers say about you | Conductor agents, separate subscription, credits per run | Included, 50 queries weekly on 6 engines |
| Check pages for AI readability | GEO Auditor, 70 credits a run | Quotability score and fix list on every article RankControl writes |
| Put new articles on your site | Your writers, in Optimizely CMS | Written and published, 100 pages/mo |
| Earn links and mentions | Not offered | Outreach drafted from your mailbox |
| Price | Quote only, plus credits and partner fees | $400/mo, everything included |
RankControl is $400 a month, or $4,000 a year with two months free, with a 7-day free trial. That covers five seats and 100 pages a month, plus 50 tracked queries across six engines, and publishing and outreach are included too. The optional Dedicated Strategist ($1,500 a month) and Managed Backlinks ($350) are separate and can be cancelled on their own.
Pages, links and publishing
Optimizely's GEO features shape pages you write in Optimizely CMS. Its Content Marketing Platform can also publish to WordPress through the REST API and a plugin, but we found no content publishing integration for Webflow or Shopify, and the Q&A and llms.txt features stay inside Optimizely's CMS. There's no backlink or outreach tooling anywhere in the product set.
RankControl's content engine writes the pages instead of shaping them. It plans titles from the questions your buyers ask, writes each article against the pages already ranking for its keyword and scores it for how easily AI engines can quote it. Then it publishes through whichever destination you connect, WordPress and Webflow among the nine. Auto-publish is off by default, so you approve articles until you trust the output.
Mentions matter as much as pages. Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions tracked AI Overview visibility about three times as closely as backlinks did. Link Control finds link prospects and contacts for each article RankControl publishes, drafts outreach from your own mailbox and follows up only when nobody replies.
Both products speak MCP. Optimizely runs MCP servers for its CMS, Analytics and Experimentation, and RankControl's MCP server and CLI come in the plan with 80+ tools, including planning and a publish step that waits for your confirmation.
Point tool or pipeline: the verdict
For AI search visibility, the verdict is RankControl.
Optimizely's AEO launch gives an enterprise already on its CMS a crawler dashboard, audit agents and a route to Conductor's citation data. It's a diagnosis layer, billed in credits, with the answer-tracking licensed from a partner and the fixes left to your team.
RankControl does the fixes and the checking as one loop. It picks the questions, writes and publishes the pages, drafts the outreach, then asks six engines the same questions every week so you can see what moved.
You can run all of this by hand on top of an audit tool. Someone turns the recommendations into briefs and articles, someone publishes and pitches, and someone re-reads 300 AI answers every week. Or RankControl's agents can do it every month while your team works on the product. Already running Optimizely's AEO tools?
