For anyone following AI search, one entry in Koala AI's changelog stands out. On August 28, 2026, Koala said KoalaWriter had been "rebuilt" with AI search in mind. Its articles now open with direct answers and back their claims with citations, they include comparison tables, and they've stopped linking out to rival pages ranking for the same keyword. There's also a new setting called "Avoid AI Patterns" that's switched on by default and removes common giveaways from the text.
I read that as Koala going all in on AI-answer writing, without checking whether any of it paid off. RankControl aims at the same answers and then looks each week at whether six AI engines are citing you, which is the heart of this comparison. The Koala details below come from its changelog, help center, pricing page and site, checked on September 26, 2026.
RankControl vs Koala AI: the short answer
Writing is what Koala AI does first. Its KoalaWriter tool researches live, drafts SEO articles and posts them to Ghost, Webflow, Shopify or WordPress. An image generator, a chat assistant, a brand knowledge base and an internal-linking tool come with it, and you pay in words and credits, from $25 a month.
RankControl works as a pipeline. Buyer questions turn into planned titles, then into written and published articles with link outreach drafted, and every week it checks 50 queries on six AI engines. It costs $400 a month on a single plan.
I'd pick RankControl for AI search visibility. Both tools write for AI answers, but only one of them tells you afterwards whether those answers moved.

What Koala AI is
Koala AI lives at koala.sh. It launched in 2023 and is based in Gainesville, Florida. Its homepage claims over 20,000 paying creators and 4 million generated articles, which are Koala's own numbers. Don't mix it up with getkoala.com, which is a browser-agent product from a different company with a similar name.
One subscription gets you six products. KoalaWriter handles the articles. Brand DNA turns your site or Google Maps listing into a knowledge base, and its agent reads your Search Console and Google Analytics data to suggest topics. The remaining four are KoalaChat, KoalaImages, KoalaLinks and KoalaMagnets, for chat, images, internal linking and lead-capture tools. On August 28, 2026, Brand DNA and the new KoalaWriter both exited beta.

Koala beats RankControl on two things, the size of its writing toolkit and how cheaply you can start. The entry price is $25 a month. You also get bulk runs of 100+ articles at once, generated images and Amazon affiliate roundups that pull live product data, and RankControl has none of them.

Your competitors are getting cited by AI. You're not.
Every day without citation tracking is a day your competitors pull ahead in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude.
Writing for AI answers, and checking them
Both tools write with AI answers as the target. Koala does it at the drafting stage, where its "AI Search Optimization" feature structures content for Perplexity, ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Extended Research, a September changelog addition, leans on official documentation for pricing and specs. RankControl's content engine builds each article against what currently ranks for its keyword, then scores how easily AI engines could quote it and hands you a list of fixes.
Where they split is after an article goes live. There's no citation dashboard in Koala, and nothing checks on a schedule. The closest it gets came with the September 16 MCP beta, which added five on-demand tools, paid for in credits, that tell you if Google AI Overviews are citing your site and where a citation might be possible. Google is the only engine they cover, and they sit idle until your AI assistant calls one.
RankControl's AI visibility tracking runs weekly without anyone asking. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude get your 50 tracked queries every week, and so do Gemini, Grok and Google AI Mode. Each check shows the engines that named you and the competitors they named instead, plus the sources they quoted. That's how you find out whether your published articles shifted any answers, and which of them need more work.

Brand voice and product knowledge
Brand DNA reads your website or Google Maps listing and collects your photos, reviews, credentials and services into a knowledge base. It keeps a version history, and KoalaWriter lets you define your own tone of voice and keep presets.
Brand Control in RankControl also starts from your live site, drafting a profile of your products, buyers, competitors and voice for you to correct. Guideline rules can go in too, with up to three of your best pieces as style references, and the pipeline writes every article from that profile.
Both let you steer the tone. What differs is where the profile goes next: in Koala it feeds a writer, and in RankControl it drives a pipeline that plans, publishes and tracks as well.
Does AI-written content get cited?
Since both tools write with AI, both face the same question. In July, Ahrefs published a study of pages in Google's top 10. Pages written entirely by AI do rank, it found, yet the pages that were under half AI-written took 82.2% of the top-three spots.
For either tool the lesson is to review every article before it goes live. Koala's WordPress plugin lets you send articles in as drafts or as pending review. RankControl keeps auto-publish off until you enable it, so each article waits for your go-ahead, and that's when you add the real examples and first-hand detail that give a page something worth quoting.
Words and credits, or one plan
Koala charges for two separate things. Words pay for the articles, and platform credits cover everything else, from chat and images to API calls and the MCP tools. There are nine plans in total:
| Koala plan | Monthly price |
|---|---|
| Starter (45,000 words) | $25 |
| Professional (100,000 words) | $49 |
| Seven higher tiers, Boost and Elite among them | $99 to $2,000 |
| Writing model | How fast it uses words |
|---|---|
| Fastest | At the rate the plans assume |
| Balanced | Twice as fast |
| Quality | Three times as fast |
Here's some rough math. On the Quality model, a hundred articles at roughly 2,000 words each burn through around 600,000 words. That calls for the $350 Elite plan, while the fastest model squeezes the same output into the $99 Boost plan. Credits on monthly plans expire after a month, and on annual plans after a year.
RankControl is a single plan, $400 monthly or $4,000 yearly, with nothing like words or credits to watch. Each month you get 100 pages across 26 content formats. The plan also covers 50 queries tracked across six engines, plus five seats. Publishing is included, as are outreach and social drafts.
| For about 100 articles a month | Koala AI | RankControl |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | $99 to $350/mo, depending on model | Included |
| AI citation tracking | Not offered | Included, six engines weekly |
| Link outreach | Not offered | Included; managed links $350/mo |
| Total | $99 to $350/mo for writing alone | $400/mo |
Publishing and links
Both tools publish native posts on your own site. Koala connects to WordPress, either through its plugin or over REST, as well as to custom webhooks, Ghost, Webflow and Shopify. The plugin even converts each article to Gutenberg blocks and picks categories if you let it. RankControl sends articles to the destination you connect from a list of nine, and beyond Koala's set it covers Framer, Wix and Notion, plus a Content API for headless builds.
Koala's link work stays inside your site. KoalaLinks adds internal links and schema, and a snippet shows related posts. It doesn't do outreach.
For outreach, RankControl's Link Control looks for prospects each time an article goes live and drafts the pitch, which goes out from your own mailbox. The Social agent watches Reddit and X for threads your articles answer and drafts a reply. To hand links off completely, $350 a month buys five links from DR 25+ sites with Managed Backlinks.
200+ SaaS teams already track their AI citations.
They know exactly when ChatGPT mentions their brand, and when it stops. Do you?

Your first month with each
The difference shows up in week one.
| Week | Koala AI | RankControl |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Build Brand DNA; write your first articles | Setup reads your site; you correct the brand profile and add queries |
| 2 | Queue articles in bulk; publish to your CMS | First titles planned; you approve them |
| 3 | Keep writing; watch words and credits | Articles publish; outreach drafts arrive |
| 4 | Check Search Console for early movement | Fourth weekly check on six engines |
Koala gets you more articles, faster, and Search Console is how you'll judge them. RankControl gives you the articles and, alongside them, four weekly readings of whether the AI engines are citing you.
Questions to ask before you choose
Start by deciding whether you need to know if AI engines cite you. If you do, ask each vendor what its tool reports once an article is live.
Links are the next thing to settle. Pages with no links and no mentions struggle to get quoted, so ask who will earn them.
Then price a month at your real volume. On Koala that means working out your words per model and adding credits for MCP, images and chat. RankControl's cost stays the one plan price.
Working from an AI assistant
Koala's MCP server launched as a beta on September 16, 2026, and while in beta it's open only to Professional and higher plans. There are 62 tools. Of those, 23 are free and the rest are billed in credits. From Codex, ChatGPT or Claude, you can research keywords, draft and edit articles and run those Google AI Overview checks, and you can restrict each connected app's permissions.
RankControl's MCP server and CLI are included in the plan and have 80+ tools. In Cursor, Claude or Codex, you can see how your visibility shifted on six engines and go from titles to a written, published article, and publishing only happens after a dry run you confirm.
What people say
Koala doesn't have a big public footprint. On Trustpilot it has 22 reviews. Their average is 3.2 out of 5. Long-time KoalaWriter users like it, and one April reviewer called it "the best AI article draft software on the market." Most of the negative reviews are about billing, such as credits that expired before they were used and a buyer who asked for a refund six months into a yearly plan and was refused.
The free tier gives you 5,000 words and 25 credits without a card.
There's not much on Reddit. Most recent posts that mention Koala are affiliate reviews with discount codes, while older threads got few replies.
Which wins AI search visibility?
My choice for AI search visibility is RankControl.
Koala AI is now a writing platform aimed squarely at AI answers. What it can't tell you is whether the major AI engines cite you, and its linking stops at your own site. Its costs also move with how many words you use.
RankControl runs the full loop on one plan. It plans from what your buyers ask, writes and publishes to your domain, drafts the outreach and checks six engines weekly. By the end of month one you'll have a title calendar, articles going live when you scheduled them and four weekly readings on your position.
The manual route is writing the pages, publishing them, pitching for links and checking six engines weekly. RankControl's agents can run that every month while you work on your product.
