Your Performance Max campaign in Singapore didn't exist last week. Nobody on your team built it, picked a budget for it, or approved a single creative for it. It exists now anyway. Google just turned on ads inside AI Mode for ten more countries, and the rule is simple. If you already run Search, Shopping or PMax, you're already in.

What changed on October 28
Google posted the news on its Ads & Commerce Blog, the same day Alphabet reported its third-quarter earnings. Shashi Thakur, the VP and GM who runs Google Search Ads, wrote that AI Mode ads are scaling into Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Brazil, Mexico and the UK come next, planned for later this quarter.
Google's stated reason is query length. AI Mode searches run about three times longer than a typical search box query, the post says. That gives the system more to work with when matching a person to a business.
The same post claims click-through rates on sponsored product listings already sit close to organic ones inside AI Mode. Google didn't publish the actual numbers behind that line. One more detail landed with less fanfare. Multiturn ads are now live in the US, so a sponsored result can follow you through a second or third question in the same conversation, instead of stopping after the first.
Why this landed on earnings day
The date wasn't an accident. Google's own announcement went up the same morning Alphabet reported third-quarter results. The numbers in that report explain the urgency.
Search revenue grew 12% year over year in the quarter, down from 17% in the second quarter and 19% in the first. Alphabet's shares fell 8% after the results came out.
Philipp Schindler, Google's chief business officer, framed the expansion plainly. The company is "scaling high-quality ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries," he said. Sundar Pichai added that Search queries grew at their fastest year-over-year rate in five years. That's the upside case behind all of this.
Query growth is strong, and more of it is landing inside AI Mode specifically. Ten more countries is Google widening the one ad surface still growing fast enough to offset a core business that's cooling.
Why there's no opt-out
This is the part that should change how you read next month's report. Google's own help page for ads in AI-powered experiences says advertisers can't switch the AI Mode placement off on its own, separate from regular Search. Your existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns qualify the moment the market goes live. No new campaign type to build, no box to leave unchecked.
There's also no separate reporting line. Clicks and impressions from AI Mode fold straight into your normal Search numbers. A campaign manager watching cost per click creep up in a newly added country has no clean way to tell how much of that shift is AI Mode.
One advertiser working through the announcement on r/GoogleAdsDiscussion called it a transparency problem more than a targeting one. They guessed CPCs will keep climbing as more AI Mode answers end without a single click at all. Another asked for a dedicated AI Mode campaign type with its own bids, closer to real control than an automatic opt-in you can only watch happen.

Not every new market gets the same deal
The rollout isn't uniform. Indonesia keeps AI Overviews but doesn't get AI Mode ads. Pakistan is limited to text ads only. English is the sole supported language across the new countries for now. Google still excludes sensitive categories such as finance, gambling, alcohol and healthcare, with one narrow US healthcare test as the exception.
That matters for any B2B SaaS team running accounts across a few of these ten markets at once. Advertise in both Singapore and the Philippines and you could be live in one and invisible in the other today. Nothing in your dashboard flags which is which.
Google built most of its AI Mode ad formats already, from Highlighted Answers to Direct Offers, covered in our guide to ads inside AI Overviews. Geography looks like the next lever it's pulling.

What to check this week
- Pull a search terms report for the new countries and look for long, conversational phrasing. That's usually the tell that AI Mode served the click, not a standard results page.
- Review your Performance Max asset groups for those markets specifically. An asset built for a short-tail keyword search doesn't always read well as an AI Mode answer.
- Watch CPC and conversion rate in the ten countries against your usual baseline for the next two weeks before you touch bids.
- If multiturn behavior matters to your category, flag it for the US account only. It hasn't reached the other nine countries yet, and Google gave no timeline for when it will.
Our AI Max testing checklist covers the campaign-type side of this in more depth if Performance Max and AI Max are both live on your account already.
The part Google's placement still can't buy
Step back from the ad mechanics and one thing hasn't moved. The answer AI Mode gives before any sponsored slot even loads, the brand it names on its own, still has to be earned. Google can sell the placement next to that answer. It can't sell the answer itself.
That's a citation problem, not an ad problem, and it's a weekly one. RankControl's AI visibility tracking checks how your brand shows up across all seven engines every week, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews included. The dashboard notifies you when a new citation lands.
The real question was never whether Google would add another ad slot. It's whether you'd know the week your brand stopped showing up in the unpaid answer above it.
You can build a weekly habit of pulling search terms reports across ten markets and counting by hand. Or RankControl's agents can track the citation side every week while your paid team argues about CPC on the other.
