RankControl vs Octolens: Which Wins AI Search Visibility in 2026?

Octolens answers the question I'd ask first on its own AI visibility page. Does it track whether your brand shows up inside AI answers? Its FAQ says no and puts it plainly: "Octolens monitors the open web, not the inside of AI answers," and the page suggests running an answer tracker alongside it if you want a prompt-level score.

So this comparison is an odd one. Octolens tunes in to the discussions that AI engines pick up, while RankControl produces the pages those engines end up quoting and then checks each week whether yours got quoted. Both promise to get you into ChatGPT, yet each covers one half of the same problem. Everything below comes from Octolens' website, including its pricing and AI visibility pages, as I read them on September 26, 2026.

RankControl vs Octolens: the short answer

Octolens does social listening. It keeps an eye on LinkedIn, X, Reddit and 13 other platforms for anyone mentioning your brand, your competitors or your category terms. AI scoring weeds out the irrelevant hits, and what's left lands in Slack, in your inbox or in your own tools through the API. The cheapest plan is $159 a month, billed annually.

RankControl is the other kind of tool: a pipeline. One $400-a-month plan covers planning titles from buyer questions, writing and publishing the articles, drafting link outreach and checking 50 queries on six AI engines each week.

My pick for AI search visibility is RankControl. Octolens points you at conversations worth joining, while RankControl adds quotable pages to your site and then measures whether the engines use them.

What Octolens is

Octolens is a Zurich company, founded in 2024, and Charlotte Schmitt is its founder and CEO. On June 23, 2026 it relaunched under a new tagline, "social listening for the agent era." The thinking is that mention data should flow into the software and AI agents your team already works with, rather than sit in yet another dashboard. Vercel, PostHog and Supabase are among the customers named on its site.

Octolens AI visibility page with the headline Get recommended by AI, saying ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini recommend the brands the internet talks about

It covers 16 platforms in all, and they group roughly like this:

Octolens coveragePlatforms
The big threeReddit, X, LinkedIn
Developer hubsIncluding Hacker News, GitHub and Stack Overflow
Video and newer networksIncluding YouTube, TikTok and Bluesky
Review sitesIncluding Trustpilot and the app stores
Added on ScalePodcasts, newsletters, news and the wider web

Each mention arrives with a relevance score and a sentiment, and tags such as buying intent or competitor get attached. From there, Octolens' agent skills can convert mentions into reply drafts, weekly reports, CRM deals or Linear issues.

Listening is where Octolens is simply ahead of us. It catches mentions of you and your competitors across 16 platforms, refreshing hourly or in real time, and sends each one into whatever tools your team uses. RankControl has no brand mention monitoring at all.

Listening to sources or checking answers

Octolens' case for AI visibility runs like this: AI engines recommend whichever brands get talked about online, so you should be part of those conversations. It watches for your brand and category terms in what it calls "the sources engines cite most," and your team then joins in. By its count, those sources are Reddit, X and Hacker News, along with listicles and forums.

That reasoning is sound up to a point. A Semrush study reported by Yahoo Finance put Reddit second among the websites Google's AI Overviews cite most, behind Quora. The catch is that Octolens never puts a question to an AI engine, so it can't say whether all that activity changed a single answer.

RankControl works from the answers backwards. Its AI visibility tracking sends all 50 of your tracked queries to the six engines in the table above, every week. The results show which engines mentioned you, who they mentioned instead and the sources behind each answer, which surfaces the Reddit threads and review pages your buyers' questions actually pull from.

Replying to threads

Neither tool posts on your behalf, though both help you get into conversations.

Octolens works from volume. It surfaces anything matching your terms on every platform it covers, and its agent skills draft the replies. One skill picks the day's top Reddit posts and suggests a reply for each, and a second one produces three LinkedIn drafts every morning. Someone on your team reviews and posts every one of them.

The Social agent in RankControl begins with what you've already published. It goes looking for active Reddit and X threads that one of your articles already answers, checks the rules of that community and writes a reply to match. Newer accounts can use a warm-up mode to get some history behind them first. Expect fewer threads than Octolens would show you, with one of your pages behind each.

Price is what people bring up when they compare listening tools. Someone in r/SideProject asked people which Reddit monitoring app they liked best, and one reply put Octolens in a list of about half a dozen keyword-alert options, calling it "a good option but on the pricer side for just keyword alerts."

Content and publishing

On content, Octolens stops short of articles. Its skills will draft marketing copy using the language customers use in their mentions, but there's no article writer and nothing that connects to your CMS.

For AI search, I think that's the bigger gap. AI engines quote a page because it answers what was asked. A reply in a thread can link to such a page, but it can't replace it.

RankControl's content engine plans titles from your buyers' questions and writes each article to compete with the pages that already rank. It handles 26 formats, guides, comparisons and alternatives pages among them. Every article goes live as a native post via the destination you connect, one of nine, and since auto-publish is off by default, it waits for your approval first.

Link Control takes care of links. It looks for link prospects every time you publish and drafts the outreach, which is sent from your own mailbox. Managed Backlinks, at $350 a month, brings five links a month from DR 25+ sites.

Pricing and trials

Octolens charges by mentions and keywords:

Pro$199/mo$159/mo15,00010Hourly
Scale$599/mo$499/mo50,00040Real-time, plus the extra sources

Enterprise pricing is custom.

Your bill can run past the plan, too. Mentions beyond your quota keep coming in and are charged at your plan's rate, starting at $0.01 each. Each extra keyword runs $5 to $10 a month. A spend cap is available if you want one, seats are unlimited on every plan, and the trial gives you 7 days without a card.

RankControl costs $400 a month on its one plan, or $4,000 if you pay for a year. You get 100 new pages monthly, 50 tracked queries across six engines and five seats, and publishing comes included along with outreach and social drafts. The 7-day trial takes a card up front and charges $0 today.

Working from an AI assistant

Here the two products look most alike. Every Octolens plan includes the REST API, webhooks and an MCP server, and there's a CLI as well, so Claude or Cursor can tell you what people said about a competitor this week.

RankControl's MCP server and CLI are part of the plan and carry 80+ tools. In Claude, Cursor or Codex, check how your visibility moved on six engines, then move on to titles, an article draft and publishing. Publishing stays in dry-run mode until you say go.

A month with Octolens shows you where the conversations about you happen, and you'll have joined a few. A month with RankControl ends with articles published on your site plus four weekly readings of whether the engines are citing you.

Questions to ask before you choose

The first thing to settle is what you'll report. Conversation share of voice is a listening job. Knowing whether ChatGPT and Perplexity mention you when buyers ask is answer tracking, which Octolens openly says it doesn't offer.

Next, check your pages. A reply helps most when it can link to a page that fully answers the question, so go through the ten buyer questions that matter most to you and see which ones your site covers.

Mention volume matters too. Octolens prices by it, so if your brand has a common name or sits in a busy category, model the overage before you buy.

And someone has to write the replies. Listening only earns its keep when a person joins the threads and does it well, and dozens of mentions a day means someone needs real time blocked out to read and answer them properly. You'll get fewer threads from RankControl's Social agent, each linked to an article already on your site, so every reply has a page to link to.

What people say

There isn't much review data on Octolens yet. On Product Hunt it scores 4.7 out of 5, though from just three reviews. The older AppSumo lifetime deal averages 4.6 across 36 reviews. The complaint I came across most often was price, like the Reddit reply above.

Which wins AI search visibility?

For AI search visibility, I'd choose RankControl.

Octolens' answer to AI search is to locate the conversations engines read and take part in them, and it's a clear position for a listening tool. By its own account, though, it doesn't look at AI answers, and it neither writes the pages engines quote nor builds links to them.

RankControl handles that whole loop for one price. Titles come from your buyers' questions, articles get written and published on your domain with outreach drafted, and six engines are checked weekly. After four weeks you'll have a title calendar, articles publishing on your schedule, and four weekly readings of how you're doing.

If you'd rather do it by hand, the work is writing pages, publishing them, pitching links and checking six engines every week. RankControl's agents can take that over each month and leave you to focus on your product.

Frequently Asked Questions

One listens and the other publishes. Octolens watches LinkedIn, X, Reddit and 13 other platforms for mentions of you and your competitors, then routes what it finds to Slack, your inbox or your own tools. RankControl publishes articles to your domain and asks six AI engines 50 queries each week to see whether you get cited.

No, and Octolens says so itself. Its AI visibility page describes watching the open web rather than what happens inside AI answers, and it suggests adding an answer tracker if you want a prompt-level score. What it does do is surface the threads and listicles that AI engines tend to read, which you can then join.

The Pro plan costs $199 monthly or $159 a month billed annually, with 15,000 mentions and 10 keywords on an hourly refresh. Scale runs $599, or $499 a month annually, and gives you 50,000 mentions, 40 keywords and real-time refresh, while Enterprise is custom-priced. Going over your mention quota costs from $0.01 per mention.

No, a person always does the posting. Its agent skills will write Reddit reply drafts and LinkedIn post drafts, and a teammate checks and posts them. RankControl's Social agent is no different: it spots threads your articles answer and writes a draft reply for you to look over first.

Yes, both do it through MCP servers. Every Octolens plan comes with the API, webhooks and an MCP server. On the RankControl side, the MCP server and CLI are part of the plan with 80+ tools, and publishing through them stays in dry-run mode until you say go.
