The article was doomed on the Tuesday someone picked its topic, three days before the model wrote a word of it. That's the uncomfortable truth behind most zero-click AI content, and it's why the usual post-mortems keep failing to fix anything. Teams audit the writing, tune the prompts, swap models, and republish into the same silence, because the writing was never the problem. Why do AI published articles get zero clicks? Five causes, and every one of them operates before the draft exists. Walk through them and you can predict an article's fate from its planning row, which also means you can change it.
The Post-Mortem Everyone Runs First
When a batch of AI articles dies, the autopsy almost always lands on the same finding: the dead articles had no internal links pointing at them, no authority flowing in, no place in the site. True, and misleading. One sharp practitioner post put it exactly right: the missing links are the symptom. The cause is that the articles were never about anything together, so there was nothing to link.
Fix the symptom with an internal-linking tool and you get links assigned by textual similarity, which search engines read as noise. The engines treat your internal links as a claim about what your site covers. Twelve articles deliberately pointing at one page that defines a subject make a claim. Two hundred articles pointing at whatever happened to be nearest make none. Which brings us to where the damage actually starts.
Cause 1: The Topic List Was Flat
Nearly every zero-click library starts the same way: a keyword tool produces a list, someone picks 200 rows with acceptable volume, and the pipeline writes them. A list is flat by construction, so the 200 topics are unrelated to each other, and the site that publishes them becomes a pile rather than a body of work. No article strengthens another. No page emerges as the one your site is known for. The orphan problem was designed in at selection time.
The alternative is subject-first planning: pick a subject your site should own, write the page that defines it, then let the real questions people ask about that subject become the article list. Done that way, internal links exist as a consequence of the plan, and every new article makes the defining page stronger instead of competing with it for scraps.

Cause 2: The Click Was Already Absorbed
Second fate-sealer: targeting queries whose clicks no longer exist. AI Overviews now appear on roughly a quarter of Google queries, overwhelmingly informational ones, and cut clicks by as much as 58% where they show. The AI engines answer the same questions without a results page at all. And here's the twist that surprises teams chasing AI visibility: even winning the citation often pays nothing, and one GEO team's audit shared on Reddit found roughly three quarters of their AI citations drove zero measurable visits over 90 days.
Now look at what a default keyword-tool pull selects: definitions and how-does-X-work explainers, the exact intent band the answer engines absorb most completely. An article aimed there can rank on page one and still record nothing, because the searcher was satisfied above the fold. The pre-writing check is brutal and simple: confirm the query still produces clicks for anyone at all. Tracking AI Overview presence separately from rankings answers that per query, and a practitioner rule from the community holds up well: favor questions the answer engines struggle to answer completely, because that's where the click survives.
Cause 3: The Angle Arrived Saturated
The web is not short of articles. One widely shared analysis of 65,000 URLs concluded AI-written articles passed the half-of-new-content mark back in 2024, and the share has only climbed. So the marginal AI article enters a market where its angle usually already exists fifty times, written from the same model knowledge with the same structure.
There's a mechanical test for this, borrowed from a planner who runs it on every topic list: run your two candidate queries and compare results. If both return the same ten pages, that's one article wearing two keywords. Extend the logic: if the ten pages already say what your article would say, the engines have no reason to surface an eleventh copy. This is the same force that gutted the listicle format, which took a 30-50% traffic hit for some sites in May's core update and then lost half its AI citation share in August. Saturated shapes decay across every surface at once. An article only earns its slot with something the existing ten lack: your data, your customer's cases, a position, a measurement.
Cause 4: The Domain's Ceiling Was Already Set
Here's the pattern practitioners keep describing, and if you run content you may recognize it immediately. A team publishes 20-25 optimized articles a month, everything indexed, and the new pieces settle at positions 30-60 or stall on page two, while old untouched articles keep outperforming them:

Cause 5: Nobody Planned the Launch
Last cause, least discussed: the article had no plan for the day it went live. Two planning-stage omissions do most of the damage. Publishing order, first. The page that defines your subject has to exist before, or at least early in, the supporting articles that point at it; plenty of teams publish supporting pieces at a parent page that doesn't exist yet, and most never go back to wire it up. Distribution, second. An article whose entire launch plan is "publish and wait" depends on engines discovering and then surfacing it unaided, which is precisely what causes 1 through 4 just made unlikely. The mentions, the community answers where the article genuinely helps, the one outreach email to someone who'd cite it, the social repurpose: those get planned with the topic or they don't happen.
The Chart That Confirms It Afterward
If the batch already shipped, Search Console will tell you which cause got it, because each one leaves a different signature. Impressions rising while clicks stay flat is cause 2: the engine shows your pages under queries whose clicks the answer layer absorbs, and one publisher watching their own dashboard described exactly this, entity-shaped impressions climbing while informational clicks fell by a quarter, and asked whether they'd become unpaid content writers for the AI Overviews. Impressions near zero across the batch points at causes 1 and 4: the site made no coherent claim, or the ceiling filtered you before the race started. Impressions under the wrong queries, meanwhile, mean the saturated angle got you, with the engine filing your article as another copy of the thing it already had ten of.
Read the signature, then fix upstream rather than in the text. Rewriting a page that's losing to an absorbed click changes nothing; re-planning where the next twenty pages aim changes the trend line.
The Five Questions That Predict the Outcome
Run these against any planned article before it's written. Actually, let me sharpen that: run them against the whole planning list, because they're cheapest in bulk.
- Does this topic belong to a subject we're deliberately building? If it links to nothing by design, it's a pile item.
- Does the target query still produce clicks? Check for AI Overview presence and answer-engine absorption before chasing it.
- Would our article say anything the current top ten doesn't? Name the thing. If you can't, skip the row.
- Has our domain ever won a race this competitive? If every ranking page has triple your authority, reweight to winnable subjects.
- What happens on launch day? Parent page live, internal links assigned, at least one distribution act planned.
A planning list filtered through those five questions gets shorter and dramatically more alive. The articles that survive earn their traffic by construction rather than by hope.
Planning Is the Product Now
The quiet conclusion under all five causes: in an era when the writing itself is abundant and cheap, planning is where content wins or dies. Which real questions, grouped by real demand, in which order, on which subjects your domain can actually win, with links and launch built into the plan. That's the work.
