Ask Google for the best employer of record for hiring in Europe and the AI Overview cites nine pages. Two are country guides from Boundless, a smaller EOR provider, about Germany and France. Ask ChatGPT the same thing and it cites one page, a roundup from WorkMotion, another EOR vendor. Neither engine cited Deel's or Remote's EOR pages for that question, though ChatGPT cited both brands for a contractor-payments question.
That was one of 12 HR software questions I ran through ChatGPT and Google on September 27, 2026. The questions spanned nine HR software categories, from HRIS and payroll to learning and global hiring. This playbook is about what HR tech vendors can do with what the engines cited.
How HR software buyers research now
HR software is a slow, crowded buy. In r/SaaSPlaybook this August, one buyer described starting with 15 options from G2 and Capterra and sitting through nine demos over six weeks. The spreadsheet never settled anything, and the team picked the vendor whose sales rep answered fastest.
3 months evaluating HR software and still picked wrong
We started with 15 options from G2 and Capterra, sat through 9 demos over 6 weeks, built a comparison spreadsheet that nobody agreed on, and eventually picked a platform because the sales rep was the most responsive (not a great reason). Ho...
That's the process AI answers now shortcut. A buyer asks for the best HRIS for a 50-person company and gets a named pick with reasons, a table of alternatives and a price range. Review sites still sit underneath. A 2026 Quoleady study found every B2B tool ChatGPT recommended in its sample had Capterra reviews, and 99% had G2 reviews.
What the engines cited in our test
I asked each question once in ChatGPT, through OpenAI's API with web search on, and pulled Google's US results with AI Overviews for the same wording. Google showed an AI Overview for all 12.
| Source type | ChatGPT (58 citations) | Google AI Overviews (111 references) |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor pricing pages | 26 | Grouped with product pages |
| Vendor product pages | 18 | 18 |
| Vendor-written roundups and comparisons | 7 | 41 |
| Vendor help docs | 4 | Not seen |
| Independent review and media sites | 3 (all G2) | 22 |
| YouTube | 0 | 16 |
| Reddit and forums | 0 | 5 |
| Other | 0 | 9 |
Reddit appeared in only 3 of Google's 12 overviews, for the startup ATS, European EOR and contractor payment questions. The two engines barely overlap. Of the 48 domains ChatGPT cited across the 12 questions, only 7 also appeared in Google's AI Overview for the same question. ChatGPT went to vendors' own pricing and product pages, while Google leaned on category roundups, review sites and video.
The API's web search is close to the ChatGPT app but not identical, and one run per question is a small sample. Treat these as patterns to check in your own category, not fixed rules. We saw the same pull toward pricing pages across 12 general software categories in our guide to getting cited by AI search without SEO spam.

The quote wall
I call it the quote wall: a pricing page that asks buyers to request a quote instead of showing a number. HR software is full of them, and AI answers don't stop at the wall. They find someone else's page and quote that.
Pricing pages drew 26 of ChatGPT's 58 citations, the largest group. For the best HRIS for a 50-person company, ChatGPT picked Rippling. Rippling's own pricing page asks you to request a custom quote. So to describe Rippling's pricing, ChatGPT cited a guide about Rippling's pricing on Gusto's site, and wrote that pricing "is modular and usually requires a quote." A rival's page supplied the pricing story for the answer's top pick.
Buyers feel the wall too. In r/human_resources this August, a buyer said HRIS demos come with "zero real pricing transparency" until the team is already 40 hours into conversations.
Any broker platform for buying HRIS?
We're trying to pick a new HRIS. We've had demos but they are more of a pitch with zero real pricing transparency until you're already 40+ hours deep into conversations. Someone mentioned broker platforms that act as a kind of vendor-agnost...
You don't have to publish a full rate card. A per-employee starting price, the modules that change the total, and a worked example for a 50-person company give an answer something accurate to quote. Without that, the number in the answer comes from a competitor or a review site.
BambooHR shows the other side. Its pricing page explains that you pay per employee per month, with automatic volume discounts, and ChatGPT cited it in three different answers.
Google's answers run on roundups and video
Google's AI Overviews cited vendor-written roundups and comparisons in all 12 answers, 41 references in total. Many came from smaller vendors writing about their whole category: Thrivea comparing BambooHR and Rippling, HR Cloud on onboarding software, and Small Improvements on survey tools. Boundless got in with country-by-country EOR guides.
YouTube was the largest single source, with 16 references across 7 of the 12 overviews. The Rippling vs Gusto vs BambooHR overview embedded a comparison video posted two years earlier. Independent review sites made up 22 references. They ranged from Forbes Advisor and CNBC Select to software directories such as Capterra, G2 and Gartner Peer Insights.
That gives HR vendors three levers for Google:
-
Write balanced category roundups and comparisons. State rivals' strengths plainly, including where they beat you, and name the company size or use case each tool suits. Head-to-head questions work the same way. For Deel vs Remote, Google cited Remote's own comparison page twice, in two regional versions, and ChatGPT cited Deel's contractor payments page and Remote's help center. If buyers compare you with one rival by name, publish that comparison yourself.
-
Publish demo and comparison videos. Short walkthroughs and head-to-head comparisons earned citations, even older ones.
-
Keep review profiles current. Collect reviews on G2, Capterra and the sites your buyers read, and keep your listing details accurate.
Answer the narrow questions
Broad terms like "HR software" belong to brands with years of authority. The narrow questions are more open. Marzooq Asghar, who runs an SEO agency in Toronto, wrote in March about an HR SaaS client that built pages for hyper-specific questions. Examples included HR platforms for union payroll and Rippling alternatives for multi-state teams under 100 people. The client's daily clicks grew 718% in two months, and the brand started appearing in ChatGPT's answers.
doing SEO for B2B companies is a losing game big brands dominate the broad keywords: • “HR software” • “payroll management system” • “employee management platform” those terms are owned by companies with 10+ years of authority, thousands of backlinks, and full SEO teams
Marzooq Asghar@marzooqahqMar 5, 2026Our test points the same way. Boundless won the Europe EOR question with country guides, and Homebase and 7shifts appeared for shift-worker HR because that's who they serve. Pick the questions that match your best customers:
- A company size, such as HR software for 25 or 200 employees
- An industry, such as construction, healthcare or restaurants
- A workforce type, such as hourly, frontline or international contractors
- A country or state, such as payroll in Texas or an EOR in Germany
- An integration, such as HR software that syncs with ADP or QuickBooks
RankControl's content engine plans titles from the questions you're losing, writes each article with the pages already ranking in mind and publishes it through one of nine destinations, with auto-publish off until you turn it on.
Trust pages HR buyers look for
HR software holds payroll, tax IDs, health benefits and personal data, so buyers ask about security early. Put SOC 2 status, GDPR and data residency, uptime and integrations on plain pages in text, rather than in a PDF behind a form. An answer can only repeat what it can read.
The same goes for help docs. ChatGPT cited several help center articles in our test, including Remote's articles on contractor invoicing and when fees are charged, and Justworks's article on pricing. A clear help article on how billing works is a plain page an answer can quote word for word.

You're getting AI traffic. But do you know where it comes from?
RankControl credits every visit to the assistant that sent it: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, or Grok. Full source attribution, next to your Google traffic.
Track the questions your buyers ask
The real problem isn't getting cited once. It's knowing when a rival's roundup, a new video or a price change moves the answer. Pick 30 to 50 buying questions across your sizes, industries and countries, and check them on a fixed day each week.
AI visibility tracking in RankControl checks your questions weekly on six engines, including ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, and shows which sources each answer quoted. It doesn't track Google's AI Overviews, so use Search Console's generative AI report for those. Link Control then pitches the review sites and roundups those answers cite, from your own mailbox after you approve each email.
Doing it yourself or handing it off
Everything above works by hand, and a sensible order for this quarter looks like this:
- Put a starting price and a worked example on your pricing page.
- Publish two or three balanced roundups for the categories you sell into.
- Record short comparison videos for your most common head-to-head questions.
- Write pages for the narrow questions your best customers ask.
- Check your buying questions weekly and note what changes.
It takes steady hours every week, and the weekly check is the part most teams drop first.
RankControl's agents can run the content, outreach and tracking for $400 a month, with a 7-day free trial. Before you decide, the free AI visibility check shows who ChatGPT cites for three questions from your market today.
