For a marketer, Perplexity is two different things. It's a research tool that answers with its sources attached, which makes it one of the faster ways to check a market. It's also a channel, a place where buyers ask questions and your brand either gets cited or doesn't.
The two have gone in opposite directions this year. The tool gained workspaces, an agent that does multi-step tasks and its own browser. The channel shrank: Perplexity's share of AI chatbot referrals to websites fell from 12.07% in April 2025 to 4.31% in August 2026, according to Statcounter. This guide covers both, starting with the part you can use today.
What Perplexity is good at for marketing work
We gave Perplexity's API four ordinary marketing tasks on September 26, 2026, all about email marketing software, and read every answer and source.
Asked what B2B buyers were saying about email marketing tools on Reddit this month, it cited 15 sources, all of them Reddit threads. It also refused to pretend. The answer said there wasn't "enough reliable, September 2026 discussion" to summarize this month's mood, and labeled what it found as general themes.
Asked which sources cover email deliverability, it ranked them by authority on its own. Google's sender guidelines and the industry body M3AAWG came first. It then warned that commercial "2026 checklist" articles make numerical claims that "should be verified against Google's own documentation." That's the behavior you want from a research assistant: sources first, and a flag on the weak ones.
Asked what people want to know before choosing an email tool, it pulled from HubSpot, Salesforce, Brevo, Campaign Monitor and others. It grouped the answer into goals, pricing, ease of use, contact management and automation. It isn't finished research, but it's a solid first draft of a buyer-question list in about ten seconds.
Where it trips: check whose page the number came from
The fourth task showed the catch. We asked for the pricing of the top five email tools for a 10,000-contact list. Mailchimp's Premium price came back as $350 a month, which matched Mailchimp's own pricing page when we checked.
Constant Contact's prices came from somewhere else. Perplexity didn't cite constantcontact.com at all. The numbers came from ActiveCampaign's comparison page about Constant Contact, a rival's marketing page. The figures may be right, but you wouldn't put a competitor's description of a vendor in a pricing table without checking it.
So when Perplexity gives you a number about a company, look at the domain it cited. If the source isn't the company itself, or a neutral source, open the vendor's own page before you use it. That habit takes a few seconds per number and catches most of the problems. Our Perplexity vs ChatGPT research test ran the same check on 44 claims from both tools.
AI search traffic grew 835% this year. Is your content ready?
RankControl generates 26 content formats optimized for ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Published on your domain, matched to your brand.

Four research jobs that save marketers time
Most of the value shows up in a handful of repeat jobs:
- Competitor pricing sweeps. Ask for plans and prices across five competitors at a stated team size, then check each price against the vendor's own page, for the reason above.
- Community listening. Ask what people in a subreddit or forum are saying about a category. Perplexity stays inside the platform you name, so you get the threads to read instead of a summary of a summary.
- Buyer questions before you write. Ask what questions people have before choosing a product in your category, then keep the ones a second source confirms. We walked through that process in how to find what buyers ask AI before you write.
- Primary sources for content. Ask which sources cover a topic best and let it rank them. Then cite the standards body or the original study, not the blog that summarized it.
Each job is quicker than the Google version, since the sources come attached to the answer. None of them skips the checking step.
What you get on each plan
Perplexity's consumer plans, as listed on its site on September 26, 2026:
| Plan | Price | What changes for marketing work |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research report a month |
| Pro | $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly | Far higher search and Research limits, file uploads, model choice |
| Max | $200 a month, or $167 billed yearly | Highest limits, top models, 10,000 Computer credits a month |
| Enterprise Pro | From $40 per seat a month | Pro features plus admin controls and SOC 2 |
The part that surprises people is Computer, Perplexity's agent for multi-step work like building a report or collecting competitor data. It runs on credits, at 100 credits to the dollar, and Pro includes no monthly credits. New Pro subscribers get a one-time bonus of 4,000 credits that expires after 30 days, and after that you buy more. Regular searches don't use credits at all.
That change has annoyed long-time users. A post in r/perplexity_ai this September called Pro "a duct-taped bundle of free tiers" and drew over 300 upvotes, with the complaint centered on credits and rationed features.
Perplexity Pro is an absolute joke now. You’re literally paying $20 a month for a duct-taped bundle of free tiers
For most marketers, Pro is still the right tier, because searches and Research reports carry the research jobs above. Just don't count on Computer from a Pro plan.
Two features are worth setting up on day one. Projects, which Perplexity used to call Spaces, keep the searches, files and instructions for one piece of work together, and they're private by default. Set one up per competitor or campaign and the context builds up over time. Comet, Perplexity's own browser, lets you ask questions about the page you're on, which is handy for reading competitor sites.
Setting it up for a small marketing team
Here's the setup we'd use for a team of two or three on Pro plans.
Start with one Project per competitor you watch closely, plus one for your own category. Projects take written instructions of up to 8,000 characters, so put your house rules there once: cite the vendor's own page for any price, give dates for every number, and flag anything older than a year. Every search inside the Project follows them, which saves you repeating the same caveats in each prompt.
If you want a weekly digest of competitor news and launches, Perplexity now runs that through Computer as Scheduled Tasks. You describe the job in plain language, Computer proposes a schedule, and it notifies you when something turns up. Scheduled Tasks replaced the older Tasks feature, and each run uses Computer credits, so on Pro you'll be buying credits once the signup bonus runs out. A manual Monday search in the competitor's Project costs nothing and takes about ten minutes.
Last, pick your model on purpose. Pro and Max both offer models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI as of September 2026. The newest top-end models sit on Max. For research summaries the default is fine. For drafting positioning or reading a long competitor page, try two models on the same question and compare.

Built by the team that got cited in 48 hours.
Content generation, backlink building, AI visibility tracking, and Google rankings. One platform, zero guesswork.
Perplexity as a channel
The other half of the story is your brand showing up in Perplexity's answers. Perplexity runs two crawlers, and its crawler documentation explains the difference.

PerplexityBot builds the search index and, per Perplexity, "is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models." Perplexity-User fetches a page when a person asks about it, and it "generally ignores robots.txt rules." So if you want to show up in answers, allow PerplexityBot. Blocking it keeps you out of the index without stopping on-demand fetches.
The traffic is smaller than it was. Statcounter's numbers put Perplexity behind both ChatGPT and Gemini for AI chatbot referrals. Small sites can still see real growth, though. One builder on X reported AI referral visits up 164% from June to August, across ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini together.
AI referral traffic to our site is up 164% since June. ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini. 109 sessions in June, 216 in July, 288 in August. Our server logs now show OpenAI's crawlers out-fetching Googlebot. So I read what we were actually serving them. It was bad. https://t.co/FmfUdl8Fdj
Dev Vaghani@DevOrderBookAug 30, 2026The harder part is proving it matters. A B2B marketer in r/b2bmarketing wrote this September that their brand got mentioned by ChatGPT and Perplexity far more this year, and they still couldn't say whether it had moved pipeline. Part of that is plumbing. Visits from AI assistants often land in GA4's Direct or Referral buckets unless you set up a custom channel group for them.
We got mentioned by ChatGPT and Perplexity a lot more this year. Still can't tell you if it mattered.
Been sitting with this for a few weeks and it keeps nagging at me. Spent the last few months getting our brand mentioned more in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers, that's the thing every B2B marketer seems to be chasing at the moment. And it w...

Using both halves
You can run all of this by hand. Use Perplexity for research, ask it your buyers' questions every week to see whether your brand comes up, and build a GA4 channel group to catch the visits. Budget an hour or two a week once it's set up.
Or RankControl can cover the channel half. AI visibility tracking checks up to 50 buyer questions every week on Perplexity and five other engines, and shows which competitors got named instead of you. Analytics counts the visits AI assistants send you, so Perplexity traffic doesn't disappear into Direct. You keep Perplexity for the research.
