An r/SEO thread this month asked a question every demand gen lead will recognize: has anyone traced a real B2B lead back to ChatGPT or Perplexity? Most replies agreed attribution is messy.
One reply had the most practical answer we've seen. Make the "how did you hear about us" field free text, because a dropdown without a ChatGPT option hides every one of these leads. Then put branded impressions from Search Console next to the month your citations started, because "most people who get a name from an answer never click it. They search it a day later."
Has anyone traced a real B2B lead back to ChatGPT or Perplexity recommending them?
There are a lot of tools now that promise to track how often AI assistants mention your brand. I work at a B2B software services company and we’ve been trying to understand whether visibility in AI search actually turns into leads. Our attr...
That's the demand gen version of AI search. Your VP wants to know whether you show up in ChatGPT. Your CFO wants to know whether it makes pipeline. This guide is our answer on where to start, from a team that has done SEO since 2009 and then built a product around this exact problem. It starts with measurement, because that's the question you'll be asked first.
Why AI search lands on demand gen
Buyers now build shortlists in AI chats before they fill in a form. G2's 2026 AI Search Insight Report surveyed 1,076 B2B software decision-makers, and 51% said they start research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google. The same buyers ranked AI chatbots as the biggest influence on their vendor shortlists, ahead of review sites and vendor websites.
The funnel shape changes, but not the work. 6sense's buyer research found buyers still average 16 touchpoints with the vendor they pick, the same as before AI. What moved is timing. Buyers now reach out about 3.5 weeks earlier than they used to, often arriving with an AI-built shortlist already in hand.
So if you're not on that shortlist, your nurture program is working on buyers who've already narrowed the field without you.
Step 1: Measure the part you can see
You won't get a perfect number. You can get three partial ones that point the same way.
Self-reported source
Add a free-text "how did you hear about us" field to demo and trial forms, and tag answers that mention ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or "AI." A founder in r/SaaS shared real numbers from two B2B products: 9% and 3% of signups named an AI chat. The top reply called those floors, since most people who hear a name in an answer search it later and arrive as direct or organic.
AI referral traffic
GA4 added an AI Assistant channel to its default channel group on May 13, 2026, covering assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Copilot. Perplexity isn't in it, so add a custom channel: session source matching a regex such as chatgpt\.com|perplexity\.ai|claude\.ai|gemini\.google\.com|copilot\.microsoft\.com. Free-tier ChatGPT often sends no referrer at all, so this number is also a floor.
Branded search
In Search Console, chart branded query impressions by month. A rise that follows new citations is the clearest sign that AI answers are sending people to Google to look you up.
If you run HubSpot, it has an AI Referrals original source for visits from ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and similar assistants. One catch from its own docs: clicks from Google's AI Overviews still count as Organic Search. Report these three together as a range, and tell leadership plainly that each one undercounts.
One more source costs nothing. Ask your sales team to add a question to discovery calls, something like "What did you use to find options?", and log the answer in the CRM. It catches the buyers who leave the form field blank or type something vague, and it gives your team the exact words buyers used.

Your competitors are getting cited by AI. You're not.
Every day without citation tracking is a day your competitors pull ahead in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude.
Step 2: Find out where you stand
Before you change anything, write down 20 questions a buyer asks before shortlisting a product like yours: "best X for Y," "X vs Y," "X alternatives," "is X worth it." Run each one in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI Mode in a logged-out session, and log who gets named and which pages get cited.
Two things come out of that spreadsheet. First, the competitors who keep appearing instead of you. Second, the sources the engines lean on: review sites, Reddit threads, comparison pages and analyst lists. Those sources are your new channel plan.
Answers change from run to run, so repeat the same questions weekly rather than trusting one pass. Our VP of Marketing guide covers how to turn that log into a visibility rate you can report.
Step 3: Rethink the paid and organic split
AI Overviews change the math on your search budget. Seer Interactive tracked 53 brands and 5.47 million queries through early 2026. On queries with an AI Overview, organic click-through bottomed out at 1.3% in December 2025, well under the rate on queries without one.
Paid held up. In the same study, paid click-through stayed in the mid-teens all year. Being cited inside the Overview mattered too. Cited pages earned 120% more organic clicks per impression than pages the Overview left out.
For a demand gen budget, that suggests two moves. Protect paid on your highest-intent terms where AI Overviews now take the organic clicks. And treat getting cited in those Overviews as the way to earn organic clicks back, since the page the Overview quotes is the one people click.
Step 4: Decide about ChatGPT ads
You'll be asked about ChatGPT ads, so have an answer. Ads started on February 9, 2026 for ChatGPT's Free and Go users, and self-serve buying opened in early May with no minimum spend. Paid tiers such as Plus, Pro and Enterprise don't see ads.
OpenAI says "ads do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives you." So an ad buys a slot next to the answer, and the answer itself is still earned. Early advertisers skew toward consumer brands, so B2B results are thin. If your buyers use the free tiers, a small test is reasonable. Run it as a separate line from organic visibility, with its own budget and success measure.
Step 5: Publish what buyers ask about
Buyers use AI to move faster, but they still check. TrustRadius' 2026 report found 94% of buyers who used AI fact-checked its answers at least some of the time, and 74% use reviews to decide. So the pages that earn citations are the ones that answer buying questions plainly and match what reviewers say.
Start with four kinds of page:
- Comparisons with your main competitors, clear about where each one fits.
- Alternatives pages for the tools buyers are leaving.
- A pricing page that explains what's included in plain text.
- Answers to the objections your sales team hears every week.
Then work on being mentioned elsewhere: review-site profiles, relevant Reddit threads and industry roundups. Our content engine plans and writes these pages from the questions buyers ask, and publishes them to the CMS you connect.
200+ SaaS teams already track their AI citations.
They know exactly when ChatGPT mentions their brand, and when it stops. Do you?

What to skip in your first quarter
- Reporting a single "AI visibility score" as pipeline. It isn't pipeline, and your CFO will notice.
- Reacting to daily swings. Weekly readings on a fixed question set are what show a trend.
- Rewriting your whole site for AI. Start with the 10 to 20 pages buyers ask about.
- Buying a dashboard before you've run the manual test. You need to know which questions matter first.
Your first 90 days, in hours
| Task | When | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Add the free-text source field and GA4 custom channel | Week 1 | 2 hours |
| Run the 20-question test across four engines | Week 1 | 4 hours |
| Set up the branded-search chart in Search Console | Week 1 | 1 hour |
| Write or update comparison, alternatives and pricing pages | Weeks 2 to 6 | 20 to 40 hours |
| Refresh review profiles and join relevant threads | Weeks 2 to 12 | 1 to 2 hours a week |
| Re-run the question test and report the range | Weekly | 1 to 2 hours a week |
That's roughly 60 to 90 hours in the first quarter, most of it writing. If growth owns the test, our guide for heads of growth shows how to run it against a holdout set of questions.
Where RankControl fits
RankControl does the heavy part of that table. AI visibility tracking checks 50 of your buyer questions every week on ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Grok and Google AI Mode. It shows who got named instead of you and which sources the engines used. Its analytics count visits from AI crawlers and from people who clicked through from an AI answer, next to your Search Console data.
The content engine writes and publishes the comparison, alternatives and answer pages, up to 100 a month. Outreach to the sites engines cite is drafted from your own mailbox. It's one plan at $400 a month with a 7-day free trial, and a weekly email sums up new citations, ranking moves and AI-referred visits for your pipeline report.
You can run all of this by hand with a spreadsheet and a lot of Mondays. Or RankControl's agents can run it every month while you focus on the pipeline. Want a baseline first? Run a free check of your brand in AI answers.
How often does ChatGPT mention your brand?
Most founders have no idea. The answer might surprise you.
